ARCHICAD is the leading Building Information Modeling (BIM) software application used by architects, designers, engineers and builders to professionally design, document and collaborate on building projects. Since its release over 30 years ago, ARCHICAD has been all about BIM. In this introductory video, learn what BIM is, and why ARCHICAD is the obvious choice of so many AEC industry professionals worldwide.

What's new

Enhanced Information Management Information is the most valuable part of BIM and ARCHICAD 20 helps architects and designers get the most of it! ARCHICAD 20 allows users to utilize their Building Information Model as the central storage place for all related information. They can even easily store and maintain design information that was not created using CAD or BIM tools, like Excel spreadsheets.
Graphical Favorites Brand new Graphical Favorites provide excellent visual feedback about saved element settings with automatically-generated, colored 2D or 3D thumbnail previews -- available instantly for every Tool. This not only helps BIM managers in setting up and enforcing office project templates, but also speeds up everyday design development work.
Renewed Graphical User Interface ARCHICAD 20 features a completely revamped graphical user interface, making it the most modern-looking BIM application available on the market today. The design language used on the renewed GUI gives ARCHICAD a look and feel much closer to mobile apps than to traditional desktop software, making it especially appealing to the younger generation.

BIM Manager on large hospital projects

We have used Archicad and BIMCloud to seamlessly connect multiple smaller companies, spread across four countries, to create detailed BIM models for a 70,000sq.m hospital project. It has also provided the ability to separate users into various groups an control access to specific files, making it easier to connect with consultants.

BIMx is also a great tool to present projects to clients straight from your smartphone in a lightweight package, even if it is a 70,000sq.m building.

Pros

The new Archicad 20 user interface is very clean and provides for ample screen real estate. Setting up large teamwork projects is very straightforward. Our BIMCloud teamwork server can handle large files with many users working at the same time, across five office locations seamlessly.

The addition of visual favourites makes the management of office standards extremely simple.

Cons

I don't like the fact that the stair builder tool is not as straightforward as it could be and that the process for making GDL objects requires a large amount of coding experience.

ArchiCAD User in a Small Architecture Firm

Compared to other options on the market (mainly Revit), ArchiCAD is easier to use, and in general a simpler software in terms of achieving the end result. Whilst arguably not being as complex as its competitors, ArchiCAD is great in terms of efficiency.

ArchiCAD makes it easier to manage all sorts of data inside one program: drawings, sketching, documentation and presentation. In a small size company, this is very beneficial.

Pros

ArchiCAD is -or at least aims to be- an all inclusive program for architects. It has tools for taking a project from scratch to presentation. And this is what makes ArchiCAD a great tool for small companies. It is also very useful in terms of Building Information Management: it allows a simulation of a built environment, and gives solutions for calculations regarding climate, energy and materials.

Cons

Having grown with great momentum in the 90s and early 2000, the development of the software feels somewhat slow. Though there has been great improvements with each update, like the addition of a new render engine, and morph modelling, they all have been very eclectic, and modular, instead of the whole program being 'developed'. Also, collaboration tools can be improved, seeing as ArchiCAD is used in highly collaborative practices.
